A dizzying array of chord-climbing riffs, speaker-rattling vocals and traumatic time changes-not to mention the anvil-dropping rhythm section of drummer J.R. If there’s one metal record we reach for on a regular basis, it’s Cave In’s first proper full-length, the decade-old Until Your Heart Stops. This is one key factor among many that burn away the hardcore framework through which Cave-In originally slipped.įorget Master of Puppets and the ever-evolving D&D discs of Mastodon for a minute. Until Your Heart Stops' production is a major force as well the band's undertakings are captured and conveyed in a way that at times sound impossibly dense, balancing gut-stabbing bottom end with piercing highs. Perhaps the only band who has successfully tread similar ground is Neurosis.

Kerrang Heavy Pendulum is the seventh studio album by American rock band Cave In, released on through Relapse Records. At times expansive and at other times dark and claustrophobic, these always aggressive ventures open new doors for Cave-In. Newly present, however, are forays into psychedelia and noise. The chugga-chugga chunks are still there, this time refined into escalating and edgy walls of sound that owe a large debt to Slayer. Until Your Heart Stops continues and widens Cave-In's assault upon body and mind. “ Our dynamics are pushing and pulling in all different directions on this record, and I find that to be creatively rewarding,” adds Bannon.Cave In have had many musical identities since their inception in Methuen, MA, in 1995, but the one that first established them as underground heroes was the dizzying, face-ripping metal blowout now known the world over as Until Your Heart Stops.

To honor their fallen brother, Cave In has kept Scofield’s P in their gear collection for Newton to use on Cave In recordings and tours. It’s so different than what I normally sing over that I was able to open up and be vulnerable with my vocals,” says Chelsea Wolfe. Newton’s other main gig since 2018 has been filling the void of Cave In bassist Caleb Scofield who tragically passed away five years ago. “ The project stretched my vocals in new ways. “ I feel like everyone just kept the music in mind and wanted to do what’s best for the song,” notes Brodsky. Produced by Ballou, Bloodmoon: I is a harrowing and atmospheric collaborative effort that sees each performer working together and outside the comfort zones in order to create something that is truly unique to the project. In late 2019, they were finally able to begin working on new material together at Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou’s God City Studio in Salem, Massachusetts.įuture sessions were planned for 2020 but the pandemic would see the remainder of the record be finished remotely. The energy and rapturously received appearance inspired the group to want to make music together, though it would take several years before their schedules allowed. The collaboration first began in 2016 at Roadburn festival in The Netherlands where the seven-piece performed revamped Converge material under the name Blood Moon. “ We wanted to do something grander than the typical four-piece Converge music,” says Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon in reference to the inspiration that eventually bloomed into Bloodmoon: I, the new collaborative album created by the legendary hardcore band alongside dark songstress Chelsea Wolfe, her bandmate/writing partner Ben Chisolm, and Cave In vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky.īloodmoon: I is out November 19 on CD/Digital via Epitaph Records and on vinyl on June 24 via Deathwish.
